About talking science with media

Children's media has traditionally portrayed scientists as nerdy or geeky men, to the exclusion of women and youth from culturally diverse communities. While we see representations of scientists changing, we also find that STEM related media may play additional roles beyond modeling what scientists and other STEM professionals look like. Through Talking Science with Media our team closely examines children’s video watching and podcast listening habits to understand how those experiences prompt STEM related conversations with family members that can lead to the development of their STEM identities.

THE PROJECT’S GOAL

Talking Science with Media aims to understand the natural interactions that families experience around STEM related children's media to develop recommendations for producers, educators, and families that will sustain youth STEM identity development in culturally affirming ways.
